Attleborough grew steadily through the early twentieth century around the railway line, and the result is a solid core of 1920s and 1930s semi-detached houses with clay pantile or plain tile roofs — many still carrying chimney stacks that served fireplaces converted to gas or simply sealed up years ago. A redundant stack on a pantile roof is a particular concern because the flashing detail at the base is harder to maintain, and movement in the stack can open up gaps quickly.
We take down the stack to below roof level, properly cap and waterproof the opening, and relay or replace tiles to match the surrounding roof as closely as possible.
